Dr Sam Grogan
Pro Vice-Chancellor of Student Experience
University of Salford, Manchester (confirmed)
Sam joined the University of Salford as Dean of Students in May 2014 and then moved into the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Experience in September 2016. Sam's role at Salford combines executive responsibility for assurance of the quality and standards of the institutional academic portfolio and its strategic direction and characteristics, alongside leadership and enhancement of the wider student experience towards a holistic sustainable student success that prepares students for life. This exciting, creative role sees him work with students and colleagues across the University and its partners to strategically enhance pedagogical practices, supporting structures, processes and systems aligned to a positive student experience and wider success. Informing his work at Salford, Sam continues to build on significant experience as an External Examiner, External panel member and Non-Executive Director in tandem with his ongoing research work. His research projects and writing in development focus on embodied pedagogies and developing the ideas of risk and knowledge epistemologies in interdisciplinary teaching and learning practices. He is currently leading work with a consortium of UK universities working in partnership with the British Council on developments in entrepreneurial and enterprise education in Palestine and the wider MENA region. Sam spent the early part of his career working internationally as a freelance performer, choreographer and director. As a theatre maker his work has encompassed dance theatre, musical theatre choreography and small-scale touring of performances in numerous countries. Sam transferred the skills and experience gained during this time into a higher education context when he took up a lecturing position on the BA (Hons) Performing Arts course at Bath Spa University in 2004. During his time at BSU, Sam worked as a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader to eventually take up the role of Head of Department. He was also awarded the title of Teaching Fellow in recognition of excellence in teaching practice. Whilst at BSU, Sam also started his PhD and developed research interests in notions of optimal experience in multidisciplinary (pedagogical) settings. In 2011, Sam left Bath Spa to take up the position of Director of Higher Education at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts where, amongst other things, he developed an innovative CPD scheme accredited by the HEA to recognise Fellowships. Shortly after arriving at Salford he completed his PhD and was awarded Principal Fellowship of the HEA. Sam has also taken up the position of Director of the Teaching Excellence Alliance programme with University Alliance, a programme designed to foster and promote a distinctive model of teaching excellence in and across UA institutions.
